I started skating when I was about 10 years old, and progressed through the basic skills program up to what was called Jr. Advanced back then, and was in a skating club. Then, when I was 16 (1981), I wanted to enter a competition. At that time there was only one coach in our rink who handled skaters for competitions. After one skating session she bascially told my father that I wasn't even good enough to give lessons to. So I quit skating. I was getting too old for it anyway, I thought. Through the years I skated a couple of times, but never thought of taking it up again. I thought I was too old. This past winter I was getting bored with my gym routines, and I was looking for a sport to take up. I watched some skating on TV, and I suddenly got a bug to skate again. I visited the local rink where I had skated all my life, and the skating club was still there, going strong. And to my surprise and pleasure I saw that there were a couple of adult women skating there, and at around my same level. Hurray! I trying to master all the single jumps (did flips at 16, but haven't done one since, haven't landed a lutz yet either), upright spins, sit spins, and camel spins, and of course footwork. I think skating is such a great sport for adults, if you can get past the cost constraints. I love being able to talk about skating with so many people here on AOL and on the Internet in general. I'm not much of a fan of any particular skater (I'd rather do it than watch it) but I think Scott Hamilton is a great performer, and ditto for Katarina Witt. My name is Suzy and while I skated a bit on ponds as a child I never took a lesson until I went to college and took Intermediate Ice Skating as a gym class. It turned out to be ice dancing and I loved it but for over 20 years I only skated on ponds a couple more times. In 1987 an adult ice dancing class was offered in Franklin (site of this years New England Championships) so I took it and really learned to skate for the first time. I have taken private lessons off and on since then. I have passed up through my Hickory Hoedown and have been working on the Willow and Ten-Fox for two years, but never seem to be able to find a test session to test them. About three years ago at the age of 42 I started doing freestyle and I love it (Maybe more than the dance!)00020000071400004645 70E,While the progress has been slow, it has been steady, even though I don't have much time or money to skate. This summer I am trying to get my lutz and axel. My spins have improved 100% since I usually spend about 80% of a freestyle session working on them, but they were pretty horrible at the beginning. My coach now is Michael Botticelli who is also my son's coach (He started skating when I took that first ice dance class!) He competed at the Junior Olympics last April as a Juvenile and came in 5th. Now he is competing as an Intermediate, and also competes in Intermediate Pairs.... This is why I don't have much time or money for me to skate. This past school year I didn't have any private lessons, but took Michael's Fundamentals for Competitive skaters class once a week and did one freestyle session the next morning because it was all I could afford. This summer I have two freestyle sessions and two moves sessions because I hope to pass the Pre-Juvenile Moves test (and the Pre-Juvenile Freestyle if possible) by the end of the summer when I won't have much time again. The first year I did freestyle I passed my Preliminary Freestyle and Figures, and my Adult Bronze Freestyle. Last Year I passed my Adult Silver Freestyle and my Adult Bronze Figures, but failed the Juvenile Freestyle, so that is why I am trying to learn the Pre-Juvenile Moves. I have had to give up figures for now because I knew I wouldn't have time to get anything ready by the end of the summer to test. Unfortunately I really have to cram everything into the summers. I am really interested in the competitions for the up and coming skaters and have found the different competitions my son does to be alot of fun. I'd heard of "ice skating", but had never heard about "figure skating" until last year. Of course I didn't have any ice nearby and couldn't start skating until about 7 months later. No lessons ,only about once a month skating at a nearby multi-purpose arena. 2 months ago a new rink opened up and I started skating with lessons. After skating for a month I went to New Hampshire at a skating camp for 4 weeks and just returned last week. I am now working on my flip and loop jump. Unfortunately I can jump but can barely spin. It's a family name, and I guess my family wasn't too bright. I just turned 18, I live in Newark, DE, and I've been skating at the University of Delaware for about 7 years or so. I did the whole rink-rat thing for a while when I was about 12. I thought I was the greatest thing in the world because I had my cooler and my scribe, I got to see all these world-class skaters everyday, and I could do a sloppy double loop. Then I became terribly self-conscious and slacked off in skating for a couple years, doing little more than precision. Then I got over it. Now I love it! I'm half way through my Gold dances, although I just skate for fun and only test because my coach is determined for me to get my gold medal before college. I dance four or five times a week, plus precision. Let me just tell you, precision skating is the greatest thing in the world! I have learned so much from it and have had more fun than anyone could imagine. Now, looking at the prospect of going to college (I'm probably going to Dartmouth.) and not being able to do precision is so sad! You know what, I'm rambling. OK, what else, oh yeah I love music, too. I play the flute and will be a counselor and ensembles coach at a music festival all summer. But no skating for six weeks! I love my dog. I had always been a big fan of figure skating -- I was lucky enough to attend both the 1991 and 1995 U.S. Nationals as a spectator -- so I decided that I'd give it a try just for fun when I was 22. I'm still doing it now, and I'll skate until I'm too old to get around the ice, whenever that may be! I skate at Rock On Ice! in Orlando, FL, where you may not think skating is a big thing, but it is very important to many people here.0002000008AE0000FE4C 8A8,My favorite skater is Kristi Yamaguchi -- I remember seeing her on the podium at 1991 Nationals after Tonya had landed her triple axel and had won. It was the third straight time Kristi had come in second -- and her display of good sportsmanship, her upbeat attitude, and her composure after missing the championship for a third straight time was something many of her contemporaries have never been able to maintain -- and it impressed me tremendously. I was happy to see such a well-balanced skater win the Worlds that year, as well as the 'Triple Crown' in 1992. She's fun to watch, she's inventive, and she clearly enjoys what she is doing. I also like Kurt Browning and Paul Wylie for the same reason I like Kristi -- they skate wonderfully, and maintain their wonderful personalities even under the most extreme kind of pressures (who can forget Kurt's valiant spirit during his tremedously disappointing 1992 and 1994 Olympic skates?), and are always doing something different and inventive. In case you frequent the G&G folder, you will also know that I too am a big fan of this wonderful, lyrical, perfect pair. Their program at the 1994 Olympics makes me cry every time I watch it, it is so beautiful. As for new skaters, I like Michelle Kwan and I love the fact that Rudy won Nationals this year! Go Rudy!
